Memorial service for the 34th Australian Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery

Air Commander Australia, Officer Commanding 84 Wing and Commanding Officer 35 Squadron visit Horn and Thursday Islands in North Queensland to pay their respects to the local Torres Strait Islander community. Supported by the Royal Australian Army’s 51 Far North Queensland Regiment, Air Force Indigenous Liaison Officers and members from No 35 Squadron, the executives attended a ceremony to unveil a WWII memorial at King Point on 29 May 2019. The islands have links to WWII history as they were utilised as a forward operating bases providing anti-aircraft coverage until 1942. Horn Island was the second-most attacked location after Darwin and accommodated approximately 5000 troops over the course of the war. Still today, crews from No 35 Squadron regularly land at the airfield. The ADF is proud of its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have contributed to the defence of Australia in times of peace and war
