Horn Island Tour - Torres Strait History Museum and WWII site tour
Horn Island, in particular, played a crucial strategic role as the Japanese targeted it as a launch base for their aircraft, marking it as the first Queensland site to come under attack during the war. Throughout the conflict, approximately 500 bombs were dropped on Horn Island, making it the second-most bombarded location in Australia.
Vanessa Seekee and her husband Liberty offer the 'In Their Steps' tour, an immersive experience that includes an air-conditioned bus ride to various military sites on the island. The tour features stops at trenches, aircraft wreckages, and underground command posts. Additionally, visitors can explore a museum housing over 400 exhibits related to military history, pearling, and Indigenous culture.
Having a personal connection to Horn Island, where my grandfather served during WWII, made my visit particularly moving. Walking in his footsteps, exploring the historical military sites, and learning more about the area's past provided a deeply emotional and educational experience.
